Why Relationship Advice Is Now Needed More Than Ever
Relationship advice is being sought by increasing numbers of people throughout the Western world. It seems as though the very foundation of our society is being rocked by continual and ever increasing difficulties. Even marriages, which have been the most important relationships in our society for all of recorded history, are failing increasingly often. The figures appear to be worse than they genuinely are, but there is no doubt that the phenomenon is genuine. More marriages are ending in divorce, and more couples than ever before are seeking counseling to help them overcome their difficulties. The range of counseling and therapy services available is constantly increasing.
The history of marriage and divorce figures appears to be more rosy than it is in reality. There have been many couples in the past who would have taken advantage of the chance to apply for a quick and easy divorce had the option been available to them, but it is only in the last decade that the quick and easy divorce laws have been ratified in all fifty states. The effect that this has on the statistic is greater than it first appears. Not only is there one less divorce on the record books, there are two people who are effectively barred from entering into second and third marriages.
The failure rates of these extra marriages is far greater than the failure rates of initial marriages, despite the belief that too many people marry too young, and the fact that the participants will all have had previous experience in trying to make a marriage work. Anyone approaching the problem for the first time would think that older and more experienced people would be able to learn from their experiences and have an increased chance of second time success, but this is not what has happened in reality. Some people, of course, choose to forsake marriage completely and just live together, but it makes little difference to the statistics.
There is no doubt that a large part of the increase in the numbers of people who are struggling to make a relationship work is due to social changes and the changes in the way people live today. In the past, there was a greater expectation than there is today that marriage would be for life, and the vows which form part of the traditional religious ceremony were taken as literal. The social conditions in which the majority of people lived were also very different. The average working man changed jobs very infrequently, lived in the same area for his entire life, and raised his family in the same place.
The most complicated aspect of marriage advice is knowing how the children will be affected. The traditional belief that parents should stay together for the sake of the children has been responsible for a great deal of extended misery, as it takes exceptional strength and dedication to make it work in the real world. In the vast majority of cases, a marriage needs to be seen as an entity all of its own, and it needs to be assessed on its own merits. Children will be better off if the marriage can be saved, but only if that is the right thing for the marriage overall.
If both partners in the relationship or marriage are determined to save it, there is no reason why this should not happen. There is marriage advice and relationship counselling available to anyone who can pay for it, and in any cases it is offered for free under charitable arrangements. This counseling will first try to get the root cause of the difficulty by asking each partner in turn to state their belief as to why the rel is in trouble. This will happen without the other partner being present.
When the relationship partners are together, the counselor will try to get them to open up to each other. It is impossible to plan a counseling session at the start, because the counselor cannot predict how the parties will react. This is why it takes dedication, training and experience to become a good counselor. You need to be able to quickly assess what is happening based on pat vases, and react accordingly. Good counselors can be worth their weight in gold when it comes to giving relationship advice.
It is difficult to arrange effective relationship advice while you are in the middle of the problem, and while you are close to your partner. Trying to persuade your partner to agree to seek relationship counselling is more likely to have the opposite effect, and make them think that you are blaming them for the problem. Take some time away from your usual habitat to research the options in peace and quiet, and then show your partner what you have discovered as the best options for relationship advice.
