How Relationship Problems Can Be Treated With Counseling And Therapy

Relationship problems are one of the recurring themes in society which will never go away. Even though it seems as though there are more couples than ever before failing to relate to each other, the trend appears to be worse than it really is. There are several factors which are making the figures worse than they would be if everything was taken into account equally. There is no question, though, that people are finding it harder than ever before to stay in stable relationships, whether these are sanctioned by legal marriage or not. The solution can often be found in counseling or therapy, although it has to be admitted that not every relationship can be saved.

The history of marriage makes it seem a far more stable bedrock of society than it is now, but there are several factors which make the situation seem more changed than it really is. There were marriage breakdowns and infidelity in the past, but it was often covered up as it would have such severe repercussions on the lives and careers of those involved. It was often impractical to dissolve a marriage, and in any cases the law would simply not allow that to happen in any case. Marriage problems often had to be borne in silence even if they were severe.

The statistical increase in the rate of divorce is extreme, but there are factors here which skew the numbers further than they should. If someone was stuck in a deeply unhappy marriage in the past, they would often have to grin and bear it. Not only did this mean that there would be no divorce in that first marriage, it also meant that the partners were never given the opportunity to move into second and even third marriages. These future unions have an even more disastrous failure rate than first marriages.

Many reasons have been given over the years for the increase in marriage failures, but none of them are highly convincing. There is no doubt that it is to a degree a social phenomenon, and that changes in the way people have to live have placed extra burdens upon the institution which is so fundamental to the health of our society. Both partners in a relationship typically now work long and exhausting hours, and there is no-one at home to look after the children. People typically change jobs far more often, and they move from one area to another several times during their working life.

All of this can put exceptional pressure on children, who are then rarely able to follow a standard program of education or have a settled group of friends. Unhappy children can make problems in marriage seem even more severe than they really are, and they can certainly deepen the feelings of frustration and despair which the parents both feel. The traditional feeling has always been that any relationship or marriage break up is bad for the children, and that every effort must be made to stay together until the children have left home.

The most commonly touted solution to relationship problems is for both parties to take part in counseling. Obviously, this can only be given a chance to work if both parties agree to see the counselor, and do so with the genuine intent of solving the problems which exist. The sessions of marriage counseling which you attend will work well if you can identify, with the help of the counselor, the issues which are causing a mental conflict in one or more of the partners. Often, these conflicts have never even been voiced. When they are resolved internally, they can be brought before the counselor and the other partner and resolved completely.

The counseling which addresses relationship problems can be extremely effective, but there will always be cases which will need something more. Counseling is designed to treat problems in the here and now, and if there are deeply busied issues from the past a different type of therapy will be needed. This could be therapy which will only involve one of the partners, or it could be therapy which will involve both, depending on the exact cause of the problem. Therapy can also include attending workshops or retreats.

Often, relationship problems can seem overwhelming, and this can lessen your will to try to solve the problems on a deep level. The best way to start is by going to place away from everything you know where you can relax and think. While you are there, carry out some Internet research into the possibilities for trying to deal with whatever condition you believe is afflicting your relationship. If you think your partner would be amenable to the idea of counseling or therapy, find some success stories and then give them material to study. You could be taking the first step towards resolving your relationship problems.
